“EMPTINESS, MY COSMIC MATE” by Intel Japitana, 2010

HIMMELREICH* is proud to present an appetizer of Fine Art Photographer Intel Japitana from the Philippines, who currently lives and works in Al Manama, Bahrain. She sent us her 2010 series “EMPTINESS, MY COSMIC MATE” which has not yet been shown in public.

About “EMPTINESS, MY COSMIC MATE”:

“Has it ever dawned to you that we were born without our permission and we will be taken away without our consent as well? This is just a sad thought. And this is life. This is being human.

This is a series of photos capturing that lurking melancholia, missing piece, lump of longing on the whys and hows of being a piece of humanity. We wake up each day, do the same things, hang out with people and laugh out loud. This is the surface, this is the whole stage that we can see outside. Inside, there are walls, there is the vast. Aren’t we just hollow skin and bones playing tourists in this space of transience?

This series brings us to our nakedness as people. A closer look to what is inside us and not what is just out there, being seen and being perceived by the spectators. This is a step backward to the fact that each of us is just looking for a space in this microcosm of parallels.

We shop for clothes, decorate our bodies with excess accessories, pretend to be this and that, pretend to be stars … We hit the road and feel huge while being on expensive vehicles, we order fast food and binge eat, we imitate moving objects and superstars…

But in the end, inside of us, we know, we really know that we are empty craters near the mouth of infinity.”

HIMMELREICH* is excited to feature Willehad Eilers aka Wayne Horse from Germany. He currently lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The black and white image shows the abc kids. It is a film still of a movie Wayne is currently editing and writing. The piece is called “the illmannered milkman”. Wayne says:

“My way of working is to let the story come to me instead of imposing it. For this movie shoot all I set up was characters and location. I had situations in my head. We would start from that and then take logic steps, thus creating a story while in it.”

The wallruss suit is part of a project titled “great tales of moral”. This project is about reinterpreting fables. The result of this project will be a publication consistig of drawings, text and photographs.

“I ♥ my Hood … Diversity, life and death are more in your face than anywhere else”

Cape Town is my city of choice since August 2009 and reflects the extremes of South Africa very well.

Not one day passes by without someone begging me for food and money. Not one day passes by without me seeing fancy cars like Porsche, Maserati or Ferrari. Not one day passes by without me seeing the most interesting faces that tell a heck of a life story. That’s why I love this town: it’s so real. Cape Town makes me realize in what country I live in, in what world I live in. Cape Town has it all. For many people from the countryside of South Africa and other African countries, Cape Town is the chance to succeed, or to fail even more. Some make it, some land on the streets. And those that land on the streets have stories to tell, their faces often tell you more than enough. The ones having a bit more on their bank accounts look like it. But it’s also them, that make this city what it is. This Cape Town is real, it makes me happy and sad and I love to interact with it. I talk to the people, I take a picture. While walking through this city, known as the “Mother City”, I meet people like Richard a Crishna singer.

I meet Nabuweya fromMitchells Plain who works in a factory and makes pants for big South African clothing brands. I meet girls from the township Khayelitsha, spending the Saturday dancing on the streets in Cape Town, trying to earn some cash from the tourists. I meet McDonald who says ”I am happy” - definitely Cape Town’s happiest street cleaner. I meet Allan from Joburg who sings me a love song and asks for food. I cook him lunch and he sings me another love song. I meet Cornay, a white homeless dude who doesn’t know his parents and grew up in orphanages. He writes his diary every day and says, he never finished anything so far in his life. He says he’s a Christian, but not every day. I meet Lucky who sells newspapers while wearing a Christmas hat. I meet Trevor who chills every day in Companys Gardens. And I also meet Nabihah from London, who is doing research for her thesis about “Freedom of press in black newspapers” in Cape Town.

This is daily life here. It makes me happy, it makes me sad. It inspires me.

“URBAN EXPLORER” snaps ghost underground station

LONDON, South Kentish Town. These are rare pictures of the abandoned South Kentish Town underground station taken by a daredevil photographer, who dodged police, maintenance workers and lethal 1,000-volt tracks.

The man, who calls himself an “urban explorer”, managed to access the former station platforms beneath Kentish Town Road overnight last week.

South Kentish Town closed in 1924 because of a lack of users, but it has recently been subject to a renewed campaign to bring it back and take pressure off overcrowded Camden Town station. Trains continue to run past the station, which is located between Camden Town and Kentish Town, on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line.

The photographer declined an interview with the New Journal, due to concerns it would alert the authorities. He said exposure was not in his “best interests” but it is understood this is not the first time he has snuck into the station.

It is illegal to enter stations that are not open to the public, and, despite their popularity among hardcore explorers, such guerilla expeditions have become harder with increased security on the tube network in recent years.

Earlier this month London Mayor Boris Johnson dismissed suggestions that the station entrance, which is now occupied by Cash Converters, could be reopened to meet the demand of the expanding Camden Market nearby.

Transport experts claim it could serve the thousands of tourists who visit the market at weekends and often leave Camden Town station at breaking point.

Mr Johnson told the London Assembly: “While there are some elements of the old station structure and tunnels still in place, reopening South Kentish Town would not be a simple project and it would be prohibitively expensive.

“It is extremely unlikely that any contribution from external parties would change this given the costs involved.”

He added: “While reopening it would benefit those who live and work in the immediate vicinity, the station isn’t well located in terms of a larger catchment area.

“The majority of those who would be in the catchment area are also within a 10-15 minute walk of Camden Town, Kentish Town or Chalk Farm stations. While the rebuilding of Camden Town is not included in the TfL Business Plan, it remains London Underground’s aspiration to redevelop the station in the future.”

The station, which was on the Northern Line, was used as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War and was immortalised by poet Sir John Betjeman in his story, South Kentish Town.

“Even Angels Will Fall” … A MASTERPIECE … Watch it with sound, without sound, check each of the shots, the editing, examine the models’ posture, their movement and mimic, the motion graphics … No matter where you put your focus, you will always get absorbed by that mood that usually only cinema can create. LADY GAGA WEARS MA GRADUATE DESIGNS

Two days ago, Lady Gaga, the multi talented singer-songwriter and exhibitionist with a flair for theatrics, arrived for her appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in Los Angeles two days ago wearing a creation by 2011 London College of Fashion MA graduate Dinu Bodiciu.

Dinu, who only showed his final collection at the MA Catwalk show at London’s V&A Museum two weeks ago, had his designs spotted on the catwalk and called in by Lady Gaga’s team of stylists, known collectively as “The Haus of Gaga”.

Dinu, from Timisoara in Romania, enrolled onto the MA Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear course at LCF after his background in Graphic Design enriched his desire to further his design skills. His final collection draws on the dichotomy between illusion and reality. In his collection, Dinu has brought the two worlds together – on first glance the outfits appear flat – as they would in a mirror – but in reality the garments are structured, 3 dimensional pieces with bold shoulders and strong silhouettes. The colour palette represents the heat from the body – from greys and nudes through to red.

NADJA AUERMANN AGAINST PAEDOPHILIAC IDEAL OF BEAUTY

In an interview with the German tabloid newspaper “BILD”, known to be the most influential opinion leading paper in Germany, model Nadja Auermann took the opportunity to criticize the one-dimensional ideal of beauty that is promoted by the fashion industry. “A woman is supposed to have the body of a woman,” she says and continues: “We may not complain about paedophilia and at the same time promote minors or those who look like minors as sex-symbols.”

Auermann pleads for a minimum body-mass-index on the catwalk and a campaign against the paedophiliac ideal of beauty: “There are way too many models running the catwalk who look like “little girl plays sexy”. I feel sick when make-up and styling, in addition, create that junkie-look.” When Auermann was on the runway in the 90s, models were sex-icons as well. They were slim and some of them quite androgyne. “But we all were women,” says the mother of three. “At that time designers were at least trying to create an image of women.”
